Transformative Breathwork
Conscious Connected Breathwork (CCB) is a three-stage breathing technique in which the breather intentionally connects the inhale with the exhale without any pauses.
A diaphragmatic breath is taken first into the belly then rolled upward towards the heart, filling up the full capacity of the lungs before gently exhaling and then inhaling and beginning the cycle again.
This activates the sympathetic nervous system and moves stuck energy through the body. Stuck energy is emotion – energy in motion – that has been suppressed consciously, repressed unconsciously, or depressed from grief avoidance.
Breathwork is especially effective in the movement and expression of grief.
The Connection between Grief and the Lungs
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the energy of grief is said to be connected to the lungs, where the Po resides – the spirit of the physical body.
Grief creates a collapse of energy within the body. It de-presses.
Avoidance in feeling and expressing grief can keep this energy suppressed within the body. This creates an imbalance of the Wei Qi – the body's protective energy field or defensive system.
Over time, a weakened Wei Qi compromises the immune system and can let in pathogens like wind, cold, and viruses, causing dis-ease in the body.
Breathwork can be a powerful practice to consciously move energy through the body – to express grief – and maintain the health of the physical and emotional bodies.
